The Ukrainian port city of Odesa was established in 1794 by the Russian empress Catherine the Great, as a naval fortress and trading post on the Black Sea. In the 19th century, it became a major transport hub for exports to Western Europe.
So it is perhaps unsurprising that, in 1930, it was decided that Odesa should be the location for a university to educate future maritime-industry professionals. Today, Odesa National Maritime University still aims to educate students in the areas of maritime transportation, port operations and marine engineering.
The university has five specialist institutes and faculties: the educational and scientific institute of information technologies and innovative entrepreneurship; the educational and scientific marine-engineering and technical institute; the maritime institute of humanities; the merchant-marine institute; and the institute of marine business.
ONMU holds conferences and events on topics related to its specialist areas of research. It also runs exchange programmes and joint-degree courses with its international partner institutions.
