Japan Women's University is the oldest and largest of the private Japanese women's universities in the country. It was set up by education reformist Jinzo Naruse in 1901 and has approximately 6000 students and 200 faculty members.

The university is made up of two campuses, Mejirodai in Bunkyō, Tokyo, and Nishi-Ikuta in Tama, Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture. It also has associated schools ranging from nursery to high school.

The university has four faculties including home economics, letters, science and humanities and social science. The graduate school offers 17 different majors across five disciplines.

There are more than 70 extracurricular clubs and sports that students can get involved with. They are known as circles at the university. These include the tea ceremony club, mandolin club, tennis club, basketbal club, swimming club and film study group among many others.

The career support team offers students help with applying to internships and offers individual consultations to help students on a one-to-one basis.
