An initiative to get more scientists and engineers into a broader range of jobs in the civil service is being planned by the Government and will be included in a white paper to be published later this year. Other measures, announced by deputy prime minister Michael Heseltine, are to increase the proportion of science, engineering and other graduates with numeracy skills who enter the fast stream of the civil service and a recruitment drive to encourage further direct entry into the civil service at middle management level.
