Your table (THES, July 26) purported to show that there are no female professors of veterinary science in the United Kingdom. Claire Wathes has been professor of veterinary reproduction at The Royal Veterinary College since February 1994, but was omitted because your analysis referred only to institutions with more than 40 professors.

PAUL PROBYN Academic registrar The Royal Veterinary College While Napier University subscribes to the notion that all, or perhaps most, publicity is good publicity, we cannot let the statistics on professorial numbers (THES, July 26) stand uncorrected.

The present number of professors at Napier University is 30 (not 44 as stated). The proportion of females professors is 7 per cent (not 11.4 per cent as stated) although this will soon increase to over 10 per cent.

On the basis of the criteria referred to in your front-page story, we are therefore unremarkable.

At Napier University, the title of professor is not accorded automatically to all such staff but is a personal title.
