Language barrier

April 11, 1997

From George Schopflin

ANN LEWIS's critique of complex language (THES, April 4) is a perfect example of the dislike of abstract thought in the guise of anti-elitism and "common sense". All specialised activity generates its own complex language. Could it be that universities are doing the right thing by teaching students that they will have to deal with complex language all their professional lives?
