British contribution to a symbol of reconciliation

February 17, 1995

With reference to the illustration on page three in last week's issue showing Mr Peter Nardini with the design of the Great Cross which will surmount the dome of the rebuilt Frauenkirche in Dresden, there are two further aspects of the enterprise.

First, the Gesellschaft undertaking the rebuilding of the church emphasises that the Frauenkirche is to stand as a symbol of "reconciliation and understanding of the peoples of the world".

Second, the Great Cross, to be made in England, is to be given by the Dresden Trust, with a substantial contribution from Her Majesty the Queen, as a first contribution by the British people towards the new church, in furtherance of the trust's objectives of reconciliation and understanding.
