Bachelor of tarts sex ring denied

July 14, 1995

Claims on a South African television programme that University of the Free State students have been involved in a popular and exclusive sex club in conservative Bloemfontein have been angrily denied by the institution.

In the magazine programme 6-on-1, a retired madam said university girls were running a high class sex network concentrating on wealthy men. The sex ring was so popular, she said, that it was rivalling an established Bloemfontein escort agency.

A prostitute interviewed on the programme said young prostitutes were studying at the university. Both she and the madam spoke anonymously, with their faces and voices altered electronically.

Free State University has denied the existence of a campus sex ring and is officially objecting to the programme because, it says, its viewpoint was not fully broadcast.

Registrar Theuns Verschoor told the Citizen newspaper he was disappointed because comments he made on the programme were edited in a way that made it sound as if he was giving the allegations credibility.
