UNIVERSITY OF ESSEX Honorary degrees were conferred on: Michael Brady, BP professor of information engineering, Oxford University, and former member of the university's department of computer science; Peter Cochrane, head of the research division, British Telecom laboratories, and visiting professor; Richard Cooke, conductor of the university choir; Wilson Harris, novelist, critic and international lecturer; Rosalyn Higgins, Queen's Counsel and judge at the International Court of Justice, professor of international law at LSE; Eric Hobsbawm, emeritus professor of economic and social history, University of London; P. D. James, novelist, retired senior civil servant and governor of the BBC; Richard Lipsey, professor of economics, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, and founding professor of economics at the university; Michael Nolan, lord of appeal in ordinary and chairman of the committee on standards in public life; Onora O'Neill, principal of Newnham College, Cambridge, and former professor of philosophy at Essex; Roger Penrose, Rouse Ball professor of mathematics at Oxford University.
