Birkbeck College University of London Jonathan Michie, lecturer in management studies at the Judge Institute of Management Studies, fellow and director of studies in economics at Robinson College, Cambridge, has been appointed Sainsbury professor of business studies.

University of Cambridge John Baker, Queen's Counsel, fellow of St Catharine's College and professor of English legal history, will take up the Downing professorship of laws of England from October 1; Graham Stanton, professor of New Testament studies at King's College, London, has been elected to the Lady Margaret's professorship of divinity; Brian Cheffins, associate professor at the University of British Columbia, S. J. Berwin professorship of corporate law; James Mayall, professor of international relations, London School of Economics; Vincent Collins, professor of the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, professor of histopathology; Edward Craig, reader in modern philosophy, elected to the Knightbridge professorship, University of Wales, Cardiff Graham Hutchings, deputy director of the Leverhulme centre, University of Liverpool, professor of physical chemistry and head of department; Bhushan Lal Karihaloo, chair at the universities of Newcastle, Sydney and Aalborg in Denmark, chair in civil engineering; Paul Wright, reader in sedimentology, British Gas chair in sedimentology; Gordon Foxall, professor of consumer research at Birmingham University, professor of consumer behaviour; David Peel, University of Liverpool, professor in economics.
