Established in 1906 by what is now known as the Wesleyan Church, SWU is a four year graduate and Christian college based in Central, South Carolina. The city is actually in the northwestern region of the state and refers to it being halfway between Atlanta and Charlotte.
Academics at SWU is separated between the schools of business and education, and the College of Arts and Sciences. SWU also offers extensive evening and online programmes aimed at working adults.
The Division of Fine Arts is a music department offering degree programmes in church music, music, and education, making use of the number of excellent performance facilities at SWU. Opened in 2008, the Hobson chapel and fine arts centre is equipped with a 1,000 seater auditorium, Steinway piano and pipe organ, and the Folger Auditorium can seat 400 for theatre productions.
Athletics teams at SWU are known as the Warriors, and compete in the NCAA Division II. There are seven men’s sports programmes and ten women’s, including basketball, golf and soccer and women’s triathlon.? The recently renovated Wood Golf Practice Range contains a two-tiered tee box and a 350-yard driving range with eight target greens.
Every Halloween the Student Activities Centre organise a ‘Monsterbash’ at Bryant Lodge, a 2,800 feet log cabin situated in woodland surroundings on campus. The mixed ensemble Christian group the University Singers take ten weekends of each semester to sing on campus and in the local community.
As well as the main Central Campus, SWU has regional locations in the South Carolina locations of Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, and North Augusta.
