Meijo University began as the Nagoya Science and Technology Course, which was set up by Juichi Tanaka in 1926. It was made a university in 1949 and is now one of the largest in the Chubu region of central Japan.
It covers a wide range of academic disciplines from the humanities to physical sciences. Meijo University’s main campus is in Tempaku-ku, Nagoya in the Japanese prefecture of Aichi and it also has a sateillite campus in Kani, in the Gifu Prefecture. They are about an hour’s drive apart.
On-campus facilities include several laboratories, a mock courtroom and a mock pharmacy. There is also a farm belonging to the faculty of agriculture, which is in the centre of Kasugai City and covers 130,000m?. It has fields, a forest, a livestock barn, a large lawn and a sports field. It also hosts farming activities with local residents.
Some of the world’s leading LED research has taken place at Meijo University, namely the creation of the world’s first high-brightness blue LED, which was pioneered by Professor Isamu Akasaki and his team.
It is the only university in Japan’s Tokai region with cutting-edge lab equipment to advance virtual evaluation of landscapes and urban planning.
The city of Nagoya is one of Japan’s three major metropolitan areas and has a population of 2,267,000. Manufacturing has long been the area’s main industry and it gave rise to the Toyota Motor Corporation and has been leading in product shipment in Japan for over 30 years.
Notable alumni include boxer Yoshihiro Sato, professional wrestler Tatsutoshi Gato and actor Takuya Kirimoto.
