Soldiers and civilians are already joining up for a unique degree in international peace-keeping at the University of Essex this autumn.
The MA course, seeks to break down the traditional communication barriers between the military and civilian components in peacekeeping operations by establishing a convergence of thought. Course director Anthony Verrier says that, while the military is often ignorant of political aspects of peace- keeping, civilians are frequently clueless about the logistical considerations.
Recruitment is taking place internationally, targeting embassies and high commissions. Interest from human rights and relief organisations is envisaged. Dr Verrier also has contacts in the British armed forces.
