MATRIX 3d

An international conference, focusing on practice and research in sculpture, linking these to practice-based research degrees is intended for sculptors and those interested in research degrees in art and design. On September 14-15 Matrix 3d will review the canon for sculpture asking how the object of sculpture and its realisation in space can continue to be effective in the face of new technologies. A parallel exhibition will explore the relationship of practice and research in sculpture and related disciplines.

THE NUREMBERG LAWS

A half-day seminar will be held to mark the passing of the Nuremberg Laws on September 17 (2pm-6pm) at the Harkness Hall, Birkbeck College, Malet Street, London.

Contributions include: Daniel Pick, "The idea of race in European thought in the 19th and early 20th centuries"; Peter Longerish "the immediate origin and implementation of the Nuremberg Laws"; Edgar Feuchtwanger "the construction of the racial state in Nazi Germany".

POLITICS OF WELFARE

The department of nursing and midwifery studies at Nottingham University has organised a conference to be held on September 18-20 entitled "Nursing, women's history and the politics of welfare". Papers are invited on the following themes: education and training; gender and caring; internationalism, colonialism and care; nursing and space; occupational regulation; religion, philanthropy and social policy; trends towards the globalisation of welfare; women, health, illness and healing; feminism and nursing; historiography; midwifery, maternal and child welfare; nursing and the body; race, ethnicity, migration and welfare; representing nursing and midwifery; waged and unwaged caring.

GROUP PROJECTS IN PHYSICS

A one-day conference on September 20 is aimed at giving participants an opportunity to share in the work of the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York and contribute their own experience within the field of group project work.

Different strategies for implementation of group projects will result. It will be held in the Physics Colloquium Room, University of Leeds.
